I wish to preface my observations by complimenting the City of Everett and the Salty Sea Days Committee. What a fabulous parade! It was well organized with a reasonable amount of delays. The participants were enthusiastic despite the dreadful heat. The crowd was appreciative, lively and polite. There was just one thing that irked me.
Of those in my immediate vicinity, only a handful stood when the flag came by. Now, I don’t expect people to stand (nor will I) when the flag is tied to the back of a bicycle. But I will stand when the American flag is presented by a formal color guard.
My family has a rich Navy heritage, and flag etiquette was taught early. I cannot imagine showing disrespect for my country by sitting down when the colors pass. Considering the events of the past two years, I was very surprised that more people did not stand. Is flag etiquette pass, and not “cool?” Respect for the flag is part of being patriotic and should be encouraged.
