A Nov. 23 letter writer suggests that if we don’t like the words “In God We Trust” on the currency, then we should not use it. Since we are paid in U.S. currency, this is not an option. It is the only legal tender currency in this country, therefore there is no option but to use it.
The word “We” includes all. All do not have the belief in God. This country was founded by many with differing belief systems. It was also founded with freedom of religion, giving all the option to believe or not to believe. Having “In God We Trust” on the currency is a government-sponsored endorsement of one religion.
The writer goes on to state that this country was founded “under the belief in God.” It was also founded on slavery, genocide and discrimination (remember the Civil War, the Native Americans and the civil rights movement?).
The writer says that it is OK with him that there are those who do not believe in God. However, he suggests that those who do not should move! Apparently, it is not OK to have a differing opinion.
Religious zealots never cease to amaze me, trying to force their belief on others.
