Letter writer David Johnson’s lack of mathematics understanding is astounding. He is being either disingenuous or obtuse. His numbers regarding police shootings don’t prove lack of systemic racism in policing. He does not take into account that there are about five times more white men in the United States as there are black men.
So if there were nine unarmed black men killed by police in the country in 2019 as he states, to be equal there would be 45 white men killed by police not 19. Or if there were 19 unarmed white men killed, there would be less than four black men killed.
As for the”armed and dangerous” statistics he shares that were killed by police, for the 235 black men killed there would be 1,175 white men if these shootings were equal by race. Use your percentage calculations.
Hopefully there will be fewer people killed by police overall in the future.
