I was reading John Burbank’s Oct. 17 column (“A fair minimum wage stokes economic growth”) and found myself getting more and more upset about another Herald headline. A raise in the minimum wage seems fair to me, seems right for the economy. I look back on how many years it has taken to get the minimum wage of $8.07 (such a small amount for so many working people).
Here’s the thing that makes me wonder. Our PUD chief’s paycheck just got bumped up another $57,102 (a 22.7 percent raise) bringing his yearly paycheck amount to over $300,000, apparently just because he has threatened to take his “skills” elsewhere. I wish he would! The itty-bitty raise for the working people will vanish quickly as those new power bills go up to cover the stupidity of the commissioners who voted to increase Mr. Klein’s paycheck. I wonder they can even sleep at night. I will be voting differently next time.
