I am a bit disappointed, but not surprised, to see Santa already at the mall. I’ve got an idea. How about next year, he comes before Halloween? Even better, how about have Santa show up when school starts?
We all know it’s not about the kids, but plain old money. You are not allowed to bring your personal camera, and so they can charge you a small fortune for a picture with Santa. To me, it takes away some of the magic, to find out that Santa is just as greedy as the rest of us.
We are trying to teach our girls the true meaning of the holidays, and it isn’t buy, buy, buy, spend, spend, spend, take, take, take, want, want, want — like the TV and stores would like one to believe. The meaning of the holidays should be about spending time with family and friends, and being grateful and appreciating what you have, even if it is less than others. That’s a hard thing to do when we are bombarded with commercials and stores telling us to spend now, almost two months before Christmas.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas, it’s my favorite holiday. Every holiday has its season, and this is not Christmas time yet. I realize Thanksgiving is not a real money-maker (except for the grocery stores), but that doesn’t mean we try and sweep it under the rug, and forget about it, and jump straight to Christmas.
Please, let’s stop making the holidays into one big TV commercial and money machine. Remember what the holidays are supposed to be about, all of them.
