During a recent visit overseas I discovered an onimous movement infiltrating European culture from Athens to Amsterdam. Garden vigilantes are digging up unused slivers of land and replacing publicly owned debris with flowers, shrubs and even vegetables. Without official sanctions, under their blog “guerrillagardening.org” they plan “troop digs,” and describe methods for debris disposal and construction of “seed bombs.” They wear no uniforms or badges and work under the cover of darkness.
To counter this creeping threat to municipal authority, Homeland Security should request Congress to enact a “Plant, Soil and Fertilizer Registration Act.” Garden tools should all be registered and purchasers subjected to background checks. Unused public spaces should be secured with fences and electronic monitoring. Guerrilla gardening cannot be allowed to take root on American soil. Sure, Europeans and even Canadians may be lax on protecting their municipal authority but these guerrilla gardeners who often belong to shady “garden club cell” cannot be allowed to flourish here.
