Regarding the article, “Hard bargain after mudslide”: We live in a country that allows free enterprise. Because of this we can decide how our assets can be used to our best advantage. The law of supply and demand has been used throughout history to make many into very wealthy individuals or companies regardless of the circumstances.
Mr. Tager and Mr. Walsh saw an opportunity to use their asset to profit from the Oso Mudslide tragedy. Was this wrong of them to take advantage of the situation? Some may think so, some may not.
Since Mr. Tager and Mr. Walsh do not live in the Oso community they apparently did not feel that they needed to do the neighborly thing. That being, offer the use of their land to help others in their time of need. Most of us would have stepped up and willingly did whatever we could do to offer any help to others.
Mr. Tager and Mr. Walsh did not break any laws by asking for a ridiculous sum of money for the use of their property. They saw a need and decided to use it to their advantage. That is what oil companies and others have done, and continue to do, for centuries.
Like it or not, Mr. Tager and Mr. Walsh were doing what was best for them. My only hope for Mr. Tager and Mr. Walsh is that sometime in the future they do not have to rely on the kindness of others to be able to move beyond a tragedy in their lives.
