Regarding the letter on apprenticeships, “Plenty of models to choose from”: I totally agree with the writer about the benefits of apprenticeships. I was employed by the pipeline in Prudhoe Bay, Alasksa, for many years and saw first-hand the benefits of these programs, i.e., loader operators, welders (pipe fitters), painters, mechanics, refrigeration engineers, electricians, just to name a few.
There was an equal mix of men and women in each trade. My brother-in-law entered the refrigeration engineering program right out of high school. After a couple of years he was a gainfully employed journeyman, raised five sons who also entered the apprenticeship programs and have always been employed. He retired a happy man. It certainly is an option.
