After quietly tolerating George Bush, the right wing has risen up in rage against Obama. His term began in difficult times. The following items list the direction his administration has taken.
1. Trying to get us extricated from the endless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and withdraw while leaving those nations in a governable state.
2. Actually finding and killing Osama bin Laden — the original criminal of 9/11. This satisfied somewhat the nation’s hope for a measure of justice.
3. Managing something of an economic recovery with no cooperation from the Republicans in Congress, whose main goal was to see that he would be a one (oops!) two-term president.
4. Passing a National Health Care bill that preceding presidents have tried, but failed, to accomplish. Other presidents who worked seriously toward that end include Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. (Perhaps this bill explains their rage. Republicans said they did have a better bill, though they were vague on specifics.)
5. The large deficits, while coming down, have to be acknowledged and remedied. Cooperation between the two parties is badly needed here. But Obama has not been the sole villain here, though the Republicans would like to anoint him with that label.
With this review in mind, noting the visceral hatred the Republicans have for Barack Obama, I go beyond wondering if they are being fair. I wonder if they are not engaging in some kind of collective brainwashing exercise.
