It has been interesting to read the recent letters concerning the Snohomish County assessor. We recently had an MAI appraisal (the best kind you can get) done on property at Smokey Point. The appraiser noted that most assessors value property at around 80 percent or 90 percent of true value, but that the Snohomish County assessor had used values of about 170 percent.
When I called the assessor’s office to discuss this, I was told that they are running about two years behind on valuations. It seems odd that they had no trouble raising our values when property was at its highest, but even with recent sale prices on their computers and Google Earth to view the property they claim to be that far behind in reducing the values.
I also thought it odd that an earlier letter named the Tulalip Tribes as contributors to Cindy Portmann’s campaign. The tribes pay no taxes, so why would this be so? We all have heard of taxation without representation, but isn’t this representation without taxation?
