I can’t think of a worse way to “help” those on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program than sending a box of food that is someone else’s idea of meal building. I see much of that ending up at the food bank and SNAP recipients stretching their budgets even further.
Here’s my idea. Get the beef industry to subsidize the program. As I cruise by the meat counters I am stunned by the prices. A cut of pot roast is $15 to $18. Didn’t this used to be a budget meal? If they fear their contribution would be frittered away on fresh vegetables maybe there could be a way that it could be targeted for fresh meat purchases.
Social Security isn’t keeping up with the rising prices of food, gas and clothing. The poor are feeling even more poor. Sending them unsold canned food isn’t the answer.
