As an organization dedicated to our region’s sustainability, Forterra recognizes that we are at a critical juncture: with the impacts of climate change abundant across our entire landscape, from wildfires ravaging communities and blankets of smoke rather than cool clean air rising from our forests; the twin crises of salmon and orca; risks of flooding and dramatically dwindling snow pack; combined with ongoing challenges for rural economies and the need to act with respect for tribal lifeways.
Snohomish County is addressing these threats with new approaches. I applaud Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers’ proposal to consolidate lines of work into a new Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. If we are going to make progress on climate change and sustain what we love about this place, we must be innovators, ensuring our natural environment is a top priority of government at all levels. This coordinated effort will undoubtedly provide additional leadership across the region for preserving and protecting land, water, and air.
