It’s maddening to hear about layoffs at The Daily Herald. I’m so sorry! If I still had a driver’s license I’d have cruised by Hewitt and Colby during the brief strike and “honked for local news!” I’ve subscribed to the Herald for many years and love this little paper, not only for its content (excellent editorial, good range of valuable and informative topics, etc.) but for a couple of specific things in particular.
One, good customer service. The Herald’s staff is actually responsive, something not true of all publications. My occasional questions and quibbles (I try to not be a pest) have always been answered. And two, that (year-in and year-out), we lucky subscribers get to read the weekly opinion columns of Sid Schwab, whose writing is remarkable (and IMHO deserves a Pulitzer-type prize or two).
Meanwhile, fingers crossed for this layoff situation to be resolved quickly and satisfactorily. I concur with Lisa Hall: “Democracy needs the newspaper!”
