Last January a letter from Providence Everett Medical Center informed me that a recent annual mammogram required “additional imaging evaluation.” Within days Dr. Virginia Eschbach performed a state-of-the-art biopsy at the Breast Care Center, with a perfect blend of skill and compassion.
A week later it fell to my physician, Dr. Albert Labib, to inform my husband Bob and me that I had breast cancer. He broke this news with hugs, a box of Kleenex and an immediate surgical referral. Soon we spent an uninterrupted hour with Dr. William Gallagher, who provided vital information and answered our every question. Confident with all we discussed, we scheduled surgery.
On Feb. 13 my family and I walked into Providence Everett Medical Center. Thanks to an earlier phone call from Kathy in admissions, I was seen immediately. From that first hour I experienced outstanding care, professionalism and kindness. My pre-op nurses, Janelle and Dawn, covered me with heated flannel blankets. I was enjoying their warmth when Dr. Gallagher and my anesthetist, Dr. Michael Ang Lee, arrived to begin early medication. My post-op nurse, Deborah, aware of my nursing background, reassured and encouraged me through the haze of anesthesia. My night nurse, Diana, and her aide, Rebecca, saw me through the night. Judy, my day nurse, carefully instructed me as I prepared to return home. Dr. James Congdon, oncologist, now monitors every detail of my progress.
By God’s grace I have enjoyed an excellent, rapid and straightforward recovery from my illness and surgery. With great gratitude I look back at the incredible care I received from Providence Everett Medical Center and our medical community. To each of you, my unsung heroes, thank you!
