While I respect the Tuesday letter writer for his argument that junk mail is good because it provides jobs and revenue, I find his argument flawed. Continuing destructive practices because they are good for somebody else is not healthy.
One would not continue an eating disorder because a therapist benefits financially from counseling sessions. One would not choose to be an addict because a company earns revenue from alcohol purchases. Why would we continue destroying the environment through junk mail because somebody benefits financially?
We (the government and its citizens) must come up with more creative solutions to destructive habits than closing our eyes to the root of the problem. It is obvious that the writer cares about our community; I appreciate his concern for jobs and revenue. However, there has to be a better way to nurture people and the economy than through the abuse of the earth we walk on.
