On Sept. 22 and 23, the professional and volunteer firefighters of Monroe and their families, along with several Monroe police officers, held a car wash and bake sale in the parking lot of Fred Meyer. The purpose of this event was to raise money to benefit the families of the fallen New York City firefighters and police officers killed during the World Trade Center attack.
Although the fundraiser was organized quickly and without the benefit of much advertising, the event was a raging success. Well over 400 vehicles were washed each day resulting in the collection of $18,000. Additionally, the Aid Association of Lutherans has graciously offered to match our funds, which will allow us to send $36,000 to help the families of the members of the New York Fire Department, and the New York Police Department.
Unquestionably the horrific events of Sept. 11 will be forever etched in our hearts as a dark day in history. What has followed during the course of the past couple of weeks has been one example after another of heartwarming patriotism. The Monroe Fire Department would like to thank the hundreds of area citizens who stopped by and donated to this worthy cause. The level of support and appreciation shown to our members by the public was tremendous. Citizens young and old displayed a sense of community and American spirit that we will never forget.
The department would also like to thank several Monroe businesses and residents for their valuable assistance in making our event a success. The following businesses contributed resources and/or supplies to our benefit: Monroe Fred Meyer, Monroe Domino’s Pizza, The Red Barn, Monroe Starbucks, Larry Bienz and Pam Wiebe at the Monroe Napa Parts House, Don Robertson at Highway Auto Supply, and Kelsey Street 76 Station. We would also like to thank Brian and Laurie Resch at Gift Basket Madness and the Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 11668 for their special contributions and commitment.
Again, thank you and God bless America.
