Public isn’t seeing whole picture

The campaign to raise private money to renovate an Edmonds Center for the Arts on the former Puget Sound Christian College site has begun. Unfortunately, potential contributors can’t know what they are buying because the proponents’ only known depiction of the future center has a few missing pieces.

The art moderne style auditorium has been shown in the newspapers, but that’s only one-fourth of the structures that will exist on the site. Attached to the auditorium at a right angle is a gymnasium, and together they comprise an attractive state historic monument. However, in the angle between the two buildings will be an ugly music practice shack which blocks the front of the gym.

All the buildings north of the auditorium will be demolished, including a 1909 state historic monument. A three-story parking garage with a conference room on top will replace them. That 45-foot high structure will abut the lower auditorium at a right angle.

The public facilities district (PFD) has provided several artist’s renderings of the interior of its proposed new center, but none are available that show the future exterior appearance. I suggest that contributors give no more until the PFD provides the public with an artist’s rendering showing how all four buildings will fit together on the small site.
