My husband and I were on vacation when our national tragedy occurred. Our first clue was a note on a storefront in Moab, Utah, saying, “Closed today due to terrorist attack in America!” Another store clerk had a radio and told us what was happening.
We had no access to a television and poor radio reception. All newspapers were like gold to people like us traveling – and our first look was a small town paper on that Thursday night (Sept. 13). Friday night, we saw our first images on a television. Terribly shocking. But that night was also filled with images of the support from all over the country.
We traveled four states in five days, avoiding all of the largest cities, and saw thousands of flags. We already knew that our country was coming together as never before. We could come across one ranch in the middle of nowhere, and it would have a flag. Then we would go through a tiny town and every building had a flag. We are very proud to be Americans.
