Regarding Phil Collins’ Aug. 4 letter, “Gun lawsuits: industry should be held accountable”: He implied that the gun industry as a whole should be held accountable for the illegal use of its products. I respectfully disagree. Individuals who illegally sell, traffic and employ firearms should be punished and held accountable.
In America and around the world, no legitimate manufacturer or retailer should be held liable for harm intentionally inflicted with one of their products. Certainly Boeing should not be sued for what happened to the twin towers on Sept. 11.
Collins seems to think that gun- makers and retailers should be held liable when deranged psychopaths use their legitimate products to intentionally inflict harm on others. Give me a break. Please! This is about choices and actions by individuals, not guns and their manufacturers.
Like most Americans, I urge the lawmakers in Congress and the judges and prosecutors in the judiciary to punish the individual criminals severely. Hold them accountable. Whether the products are automobiles, firearms, microwaves, hammers or pillows, the criminal mind will employ whatever means necessary to maim and kill. Do not punish the legitimate manufacturers, retailers or citizens who use and enjoy these products. The letter really begs the question: when will the anti-gun community in this country understand that without the Second Amendment, ultimately, all of our other rights and freedoms are lost?
