Race to bottom no help to workers

I have seen many letters blaming mostly the Machinists union for Boeing’s move to South Carolina. I see it as chasing after low wages, and with the North American Free Trade Agreement, Boeing can easily move to Mexico next.

Anyone who thinks the Mexicans can’t build anything need only look at the cars built there. They are mostly as reliable as any car built in Japan or Korea and better than most any car built in Germany or here. Consumer Reports will back that up.

I am old enough to remember when the shoe and clothing industry moved from the Northeastern states down to the right-to-work South. They were crowing about it then but they were pretty sad when all that moved offshore.

What I am trying to say is the race to the bottom won’t help any American worker. I will say my union-made Ford F150 is the fifth F150 I’ve owned and I have never had any problems with them other than maintenance. One I kept for 260,000 miles and I never did have any trouble. I finally just got sick of looking at it so I bought another.

I really love my Harley, which was also union-made, and Germany and Japan are Harley Davidson’s biggest overseas markets. That says a lot.
