I’ve heard The Herald’s plea for donations. I’ve seen your plea for help through paid subscriptions during this unprecedented time. I want you to know that we do understand the importance of a free, independent press.
It was for good reason that our Founding Fathers put a guarantee of a free press as the First Amendment to our Constitution: “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom … of the press.” But freedom of the press doesn’t pay for the press, and the staff, and the newsprint, and the delivery system.
I’ve often heard that freedoms come at a price. We, the citizens, need to step up and pay that price, if we value that freedom. To that end, I hope others will donate, will subscribe.
I suppose that the problem for The Herald, and for so many other news outlets, at this time is two-pronged. There is an immediate cash-flow problem, and there is a longer term viability problem. To help the cash-flow problem, if you offer your subscription for as long a period as possible, you will be helping a lot. In fact, I’d suggest that if the Herald could accept a longer-than-one-year subscription, we could help even more. And of course, your donations to The Herald, or to other independent news organizations (Investigate West is a personal favorite), will help in both the short term and for the long haul.
