Mr. John Petroff’s Jan. 6 letter stated his opinion that the last presidential election was stolen by Mr. George Bush because of the Electoral College (“Presidency: Election issue hasn’t gone away because of war”). He got some intense criticism by at least three letter writers to your column. What has been missing in this dialogue are my questions:
How many votes did Mr. Gore or Mr. Bush receive from voters who were or are not citizens of the United States and thereby not authorized to vote in our elections? What was the effect of the illegal votes in our last presidential election?
That question was not asked by the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, the justices of the Florida Supreme Court, the candidates, their highly paid attorneys, members of Congress, the members of either political party or any national TV anchor. I don’t recall any talk radio hosts asking it either.
Had anyone truly wanted to determine the authenticity of the last presidential election, they might have taken a voting list in an area where there is suspected voter fraud, knocked on doors, asked for the person named on the voters list, and asked a few simple questions: “Is this your signature on this voters list? Did you vote? Can you prove you are a citizen of the United States?”
With the Motor Voter Law, put in place during the Clinton administration, I will bet that there could be more than a million voters nationwide who voted and were not/are not citizens of our country. By the way, were you ever asked to prove your citizenship when you registered to vote? In 10 times of registering I was never asked!
I would hope that people questioning the authenticity of the last presidential election first ask themselves whether or not the illegal voters voted for Mr. Gore or Mr. Bush. Once that question is resolved then proceed to the real question. Why hasn’t our Washington state Legislature started the current session with a bill requiring every state voter to re-register to vote and provide proof of citizenship when they do so?
It’s about time someone stood up to the question. Why not us?
