Recent articles in The Herald makes one wonder what is really going on in Snohomish County, particularly when it comes to actions of our County Executive.
Appearing before a business group he proudly beat his chest and said that he had enticed a bottling company to build a plant in Everett. A
t first blush, one thinks this would create new jobs in the county. But then as one reads further in the article it appears that this is not a “done deal” since neither of the other entities, the city of Everett or the Port of Everett had even negotiated with this proposed industry.
Then we continue to hear that the county has a hiring freeze, that many dedicated county employees are forced to take “furlough days” because of county budget problems. Now we find that evidently this policy does not apply to our county executive. A recent hire in his office was a reporter from a county weekly paper. Now the executive has two newspaper reporters to put out “spin” to make him look good. Evidently no hiring freeze here and no furlough days for his employees. Of course, one can understand his need for two “flacks” because of his ineptitude.
When the former deputy executive resigned, his secretary was then placed in the county’s Economic Development program. Once again, no “hiring freeze” for the chosen few in the Executive’s Office.
I, for one, am pleased that the citizens of the county will have an opportunity to replace our current executive this November. We have had two prior execs who did a great job for all of our citizens and while we deserve no less now, in my opinion we have been seriously “short changed” for almost eight years now.
