In April, I was privileged to lead a class discussion for the students at Machias Elementary School, for their “Day-of-Science.” At the end of the day, at home, reflecting on my experience during what could have been a rather “harrowing” day reacting with a bunch of second to fourth graders, I quickly realized the most satisfying part of my whole day was watching the great respect that has been developed between the teachers and their students.
As having a rather large family of my own, I’m quite familiar with the challenges presented by a few pre-teen youngsters, not to mention a “couple of dozen’ all from different family backgrounds. At the end of each of the several sessions spanning the full school day, it was most impressive how each of the teachers was able to garner the attention of all their students and lead them to the next part of the program, with an absolute minimal amount of confusion. We all need to reflect on the challenges most of our school teachers face on a daily basis. And not be too quick to critique.
