I am incensed that our state Legislature would even think about overturning voter-passed initiative Initiative 713. As a citizen, I was pleased that the people of this state chose to reject cruelty in the form of steel-jawed leghold traps.
These devices are indiscriminate in their methods. Children, cats and dogs are all at risk with these traps. Come on, people of Washington! I’m having a little trouble with reconciling my family’s reaction to Sept. 11 as an attack on freedom and fairness and on the other hand, my state Legislature attacking the voters’ mandate, an issue of freedom. There is a family up the street from us who had a banner on their house saying, “Welcome home Daddy!, USS Ingraham.” We have not yet had the pleasure of meeting them during our numerous walks around with the kids. My guess is that he would not be amused that the people he swore to protect are being disrespected like this.
