I disagree with your Wednesday editorial supporting military recruiters on high school campuses.
First, schools should not release personal information about students to anyone without their permission. Releasing information is a violation of their right to privacy. Students should not have to opt out. If they want to have personal information given to others, they should sign a form to opt in.
Second, the military trains people to kill others and, in these days of war in Iraq, puts many of its members in very dangerous situations. It is not a good option for any student.
Students who are over 18 and entitled to make their own decisions as adults can find their way to military recruiting offices if they really want to join the military. High school campuses, where most students are under 18, are no place for military recruiters. Young people are too likely to be dazzled by the benefits without fully taking into consideration the dangers of military service.
