Every morning I walk into my contemporary world issues class prepared to hear the brutal truth about what’s happening in and around my country. I’ve read many newspapers. What bothers me is that every morning it’s the same headlines spread across the country, from suicide bombings to assassinations.
I’m not saying these stories aren’t newsworthy, but I find it rather depressing to only ever hear the negative side of America’s occupation in Iraq. It’s rare that I read an article about how soldiers handed out food to homeless Iraqis, or helped illiterate Iraqi children to read. I guess it’s because a soldier helping a child to read is less sensational than continually seeing death on the front page of almost every paper.
Is that what the American morale has been lowered to? Only wanting to hear about death, angst, scandals and lies? I hope not. I hope that as I continue my education and enter my career, that the world will have changed. Hopefully that change will include the way the media report news.
