Now the election is done, it’s time to reflect on a few realities germane to Republican’s loyalty to their “good” side.
Steve King’s re-election in Iowa is a blatant endorsement of racism. Many Republican candidates aired racist ads, especially one calling their Muslim opponent a terrorist. Trump demagogued those legally seeking asylum while fleeing oppression in Central America. And many bought his spiel. Republicans lied and lied and lied about their record and plans to protect those 120 million citizens with pre-existing conditions. Trump blatantly lied more and more as the election drew near especially about imaginary middle class tax cuts.
But the Republicans voted for Republicans because Trump’s tariffs and irresponsible tax cuts to the rich and the concomitant ballooning of our very real federal deficit haven’t yet interfered with the economy’s trajectory. Republicans were loyal even though most new wealth created in the last 40 years has undeniably gone to the top 10 percent and especially the top 1 percent. Our booming economy isn’t booming for the majority. Anywhere where Republicans are popular at least. It hasn’t for decades. Few economists give Trump’s policies or the absurdly irresponsible tax bill passed in Congress credit for anything good for average Americans but people, especially less educated Republicans, did what they always do: They acted with the ignorance of emotion not enlightened self interest. What else is new?
