Republicans in Congress not reining Trump in

It has been nearly a year since the tyrant Donald Trump became president of the United States. I have been hoping against hope that Congress would protect us from this madman.

Sadly, Congress – specifically Republicans in Congress – have failed us. They have been complicit in their silence by allowing Donald Trump to cement his role as a dictator. Republicans have been silent in protecting the free press. By their silence they have agreed that Mexicans and Muslims are criminals, liars, rapists, and/or terrorists. By their silence they have agreed that Nazis and white nationalists are good people.

By their silence they have agreed that science of all kinds, including protecting our environment, must be eliminated. By their silence they have agreed that only wealthy people and corporations deserve tax breaks. By their silence they have agreed that poor children do not deserve health care.

By their silence they have agreed that oil companies may continue to poison ground water without penalty. By their silence they have agreed that Donald Trump should not be held accountable for assaulting over 16 women. By their silence they have given Mr. Trump permission to end democracy in America.

I keep hoping that Congress will wake up and do something, but I fear they have already waited too long. Read “It Can’t Happen Here” by Sinclair Lewis and you will realize that the reigns of Hitler and Mussolini can happen again and, unless we act now, America is perilously close to repeating a very dark time in history.

Write or call your Congressperson to express your concerns and then pledge to elect as many Democrats as you can in 2018.
