Upon reading your May 2 editorial, “Iraq course correction might be needed soon,” I got a sick feeling in my stomach. I found your message to be defeatist and serving the terrorists. To call out President Bush for being stubborn is absurd.
Wars are won by stubborn, resolved men, not wobbly wimps.
Washington fought the War of Independence for eight years and didn’t win his first victory for four years. Lincoln lost more than 300,000 men in four years with the press at his heels and some of his generals reluctant to fight. He was resolute, obdurate and the Union was preserved.
After losing battle after battle in the Pacific and Europe, Roosevelt stayed the course along with Truman and prevailed in WWII. The British would be speaking German now if they weren’t blessed with Winston Churchill. Reagan dared to stand fast against the Soviets and won the Cold War.
You also berated the president for not admitting mistakes made in Iraq to a bunch of insolent, punk reporters. They wanted this so that Kerry would have fodder to attack Bush. You put forth the notion that Bush was the only leader believing that Saddam had WMDs.
You ought to read your own paper’s archives to learn that this also was the conviction of Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and Sen. Tom Daschle as well as every intelligence agency in the world including the British, French, Germans, Russians and the U.N.
Too much of the media, press and certain Democrat leaders are doing just what Osama bin Laden and the terrorists want, breaking down the resolve of our nation and encouraging us to cut and run. Once you cut and run, it’s hard to stop running. I fear that if enough true patriots with backbone don’t stand their ground now this will happen again, and we will welcome in the new Jerusalem West.
