I’m writing to comment on the negative reactions of many of our neighbors to the south. On the opening day of the Seahawk football season, the U.S. Navy performed a “flyby” as a patriotic gesture. Immediately the police and the news media were deluged with telephone calls complaining of the noise, distraction and inconvenience the planes caused. One caller stated that she should have been notified in advance, while another said that it scared him.
This attitude prompted me to wonder if other Americans shared this same feeling or were the complaints generated by a small group of malcontents?
Have we become so complacent in our little part of the world that we forget that the men and women of our armed forces are in a life and death struggle against terrorism? Have we ignored the fact that the sounds of cannons, rockets and missiles, and yes, even jets, are heard ona daily basis in many parts of the world? I strongly believe that the roar of our jets should be a wake-up alarm. It is the sound of freedom and a notice to all Americans that a vigilant watch is always present.
