I would like to support Snohomish County’s upgrade of its emergency communications system’s analog format to digital, but I cannot support Proposition 1.
It isn’t that I won’t support a sales tax increase to fund it. It is that I won’t support a sales tax increase for this need that has no sunset clause. Nothing in the proposition indicates it has an end date.
To pass this would add a permanent 0.1% increase in our sales tax. What becomes of this added tax once the system is place. The generated income would easily outpace the needed upkeep. The taxable income for Snohomish County in 2017 was $155.3 billion.
