The U.S. Postal Service announced that each 1 cent increase in gas prices costs them $8 million. There was a $500 million increase in their transportation costs in 2007 versus 2006. Do we really need residential mail delivery service six days a week? People I talk to claim they would not miss mail delivery on Saturdays. Keep the offices open but keep the vehicles parked. This would reduce delivery costs by 17 percent and labor costs would undoubtedly be significantly reduced as well by offering postal workers a straight five-day work week.
