More big plans for a “swanky” waterfront means more big money for out-of-town developers. All this great “affordable housing” (for millionaires) with the bills being paid for by Mother Nature and North Everett residents.
Very few cities are blessed with an estuarial environment. The ecology of estuarine waters is their high productivity, which serves as an area in which there is an extensive fishery – or more important, a nursery ground for the young stages of commercially important fish.
The article “Few realize sound’s troubles” ran on July 11. We keep allowing this “swanky” development, and you wonder why Puget Sound is in trouble. A quote from the July 7 article, “More big plans for waterfront” says: “and the waterfront development that’s taking place, it seems a natural part of the evolution.”
The next big step in this evolution might be the removal – or filling of the “Maulsby Swamp.” We can’t have all these bugs and birds flying around this fancy new neighborhood! It’s one of the most pristine/swanky developments of nature that we have in the city. Many others have been destroyed. Maybe the people of Everett don’t want another “Seattle” with all the high-rise, view-blocking buildings on the water.
The “local” developer (Chicago) of the condos first proposed buildings at a certain height, with a price of $300 million, but they weren’t satisfied. They came back with a revised proposal to add another story. The $300 million wasn’t quite enough. Let’s squeeze another $12 million as a bonus – paid for by the additional blockage in views, by the generous residents on Grand Avenue – wow!
All the benefits that this “crown jewel” will bring to Everett citizens – where do I sign up for my share of the booty? This unique part of the city should be saved for the eyes – not the wallets.
