Let’s say you were told you are being evicted from your home — to make room for a new resident who gets to rent it.
That is how it feels after learning about the Mukilteo School District Boundary Committee’s proposal. At the Dec. 14 school board meeting, the committee will propose moving much of the Fairmont neighborhood in South Everett from Fairmount Elementary to Challenger Elementary.
My understanding is that it will help make room for new renters on Highway 99, just south of Airport Road.
To add insult to injury, the new school assignment is one of the poorest performing schools in the Mukilteo School District.
Because it is a less desirable school, with a GreatSchools.org rating of only 3, it will be more difficult for us to sell our homes. All my research indicates school ratings are a top factor in a home purchase.
Residents in my neighborhood are just learning about this boundary proposal this week, as some of my neighbors go door to door to make them aware.
I ask that our elected officials on the Mukilteo School Board do right by those of us financially invested in the community. Before making a final decision, I request that they hold a public forum so that my neighbors can have an opportunity to learn about the proposal and alternatives, to ask questions and have concerns considered before making a final decision.
