In response to the Jan. 27 letter, “Will district fight airport expansion?” I wish to clarify the position of the Mukilteo School District regarding potential expansion at Paine Field. The fact is, we are involved in the issue. The school district has said that its primary concern regarding airline traffic is the potential impact such expansion would have on the educational environment for children in Mukilteo schools.
It’s important to note that there hasn’t been a specific proposal for commercial airline service at Paine Field. Nevertheless, the board sent a letter sent last June to the mayors of Mukilteo and Everett, expressing concern “that any significant increase in airplane traffic during the school day could have a detrimental impact on the learning of our students.” The letter is, in fact, quoted within an interlocal agreement that was presented by the city of Mukilteo to the Snohomish County Council that opposes the use of Paine Field for air passenger service.
The board also asked that the school district be included in any future discussions that may lead to proposals for expansion. As a result, school board member Kevin Laverty was appointed to a 12-member panel that is reviewing current and potential uses of the airport.
Yes, the school district is concerned about the potential of more noise in Mukilteo classrooms. There are a number of questions that still need answers, though, such as how much of an increase in airplane traffic are we talking about? What aircraft would be permitted? During what time periods? What operational controls and mitigation will occur and who will be expected to pay? Rest assured, the Mukilteo School District will do whatever is necessary to protect the learning environment of our students.
