I don’t know whose behavior I find more deplorable, the students who committed the prank at Snohomish High School or the parents who protested their punishment. As an educator, I find that this type of attitude isn’t that terribly uncommon.
It’s unfortunate that these kids will probably learn only one thing from this incident: The Snohomish School District was unfair. The truth of the matter is that the parents are unfair. These “adults” could let this serve as a valuable lesson down the road and hope that their children learn and grow from this incident. Instead, they will learn something else: what I did wasn’t so bad and my parents showed them.
When students try to disrupt the learning process by trashing the school and making rooms inaccessible, the punishment given by the principal is warranted. I applaud the district’s decision to not give in to the complaints of these parents.
