Regarding the Thursday article, “Suspect named in W. Casino Road shooting”:
Why are we scaring all the mothers? On Jan. 19, a man was fatally shot in a condominium at 1001 W. Casino Road. To the police, the crime looks like a home invasion robbery or a drug deal gone bad.
The crime is tragic, but why would this event cause us to lock down seven schools and call the parents of all the children and scare the mothers to death? The risk of this type of crime spilling over to a school is virtually zero. We add to the general feeling of hysteria about the safety of our children without making any improvement in safety.
The fact is, murder rates in America have gone down the whole time I’ve been alive, but society’s fear of it has gone up the whole time. The risk of being killed on the ride home from school is far greater than that of being murdered at school. Should we call all the parents with a warning each time someone dies in an auto accident in America?
