Granite Falls schools are the heart of our small, but rapidly growing community. Besides providing challenging curricula and academic programs for students of all ages and abilities, our schools provide the facilities for most of our community athletic practices and competitions. Our school population has more than doubled in the last 13 years and our district has been able to keep up with that growth thanks to taxpayer supported levies.
Our Feb. 5 levy is asking that Granite Falls voters continue to support our schools by approving a program and operations levy and a technology and capital projects levy. Both of these levies will uphold the numerous programs that directly benefit our students and indirectly benefit all of our community. Both are simply replacement levies, which means that our property taxes will not increase when they are approved. Kids who participate in after-school activities are far less likely to become involved in drugs and other undesirable behaviors. Our levies will ensure that our kids have a place to go where they are genuinely welcomed.
In addition to the levies, we are asking the community to support a bond that will build our new high school and provide much-needed classroom space throughout the district. Approximately 100 students will graduate from the high school this spring; within five years that number will double to more than 200 students. Not only will this new construction purvey new classrooms, the high school will also provide our town with a central area where students, families and friends can utilize facilities. A 500-seat auditorium, 1,200-seat gym, tennis courts and more practice fields will combine to create the heart of a thriving and healthy community.
Voters of Granite Falls, please vote yes for schools Feb. 5.
