Schreiber should resign from Stanwood-Camano school board

Al Schreiber needs to resign from the Stanwood-Camano School District’s Board of Directors; not just from his position as board president, but his seat and role in its entirety.

Schreiber refuses to respond to community members’ and colleagues’ emails; in the Aug. 30 special session, he justified this by saying that he’s “not an email kind of guy.” Yet, as illustrated by Isabella Loy’s Stanwood-Camano News article on Nov. 5, Schreiber can absolutely be an “email kind of guy” when he sees fit.

He does not challenge the unprofessional behavior of fellow directors Betsy Foster and Steve King. This unhealthy dynamic has brought meaningful work of the school board to a grinding halt. It also runs counter to the expectations laid out in Board Policy 5161: Civility in the Workplace.

Schreiber brought a personnel concern about a building administrator to the board and superintendent, apparently without following the procedures and expectations laid out in Board Policies 1005 (Key Functions of the Board) and 4220 (Complaints Concerning Staff or Programs). He has certainly been a school board director here long enough to know — and do — better.

He is an ineffective leader and a contributor to the dysfunction that has put our district’s school board at the front and center of local and regional news since March. He needs to remove himself from this role now to prevent further damage to the community’s reputation and morale.

Al Schreiber, please do right by your community. Step down now — and for good — from the Stanwood-Camano School Board.
