I read with concern about Mayor Lynn Walty and the Lake Stevens City Council making a push to expand the city’s urban growth area by approximately 1,000 additional acres.
I have been closely following Lake Stevens as it has gone through its 10-year comprehensive plan update and there was no mention of this proposal in the document they passed at their council meeting. An additional 1,000 acres is substantial, and residents and affected property owners have the right to be a part of the public process on this issue and others.
While Lake Stevens can still hold public hearings on the issue, it should be noted that Mayor Walty already has applied to Snohomish County for the urban growth area expansion. This leaves me to wonder just how willing the mayor and council are to hearing our concerns if they have made up their minds already to expand the city to almost twice its planned size.
