What kind of thinking goes on in planning for our daily newspaper that would allow the headline on the Oct. 19 front page entilted: “Retireees get a bonus”?
Surely someone on the staff understands the definition of “bonus.” I realize that this was an Associated Press story, not done locally, but does the service also dictate the headline to be used? I think not. Reading the story would seem to imply that this was now being announced for political purposes, citing the close races in many states. I believe the facts are that the Social Security administration must use the government’s inflation figures measured between fiscal years (Sept. 30 to Sept. 30).
Let’s try to think things out before writing headlines in the future. I suspect that no Social Security recipient in Snohomish County is rubbing his or her hands in glee over this cost of living increase. Check the price of gasoline and of prescriptions locally and you will understand.
