I would like to draw attention to the need to increase the punishment for vehicular homicide. I recently lost my friend, Georgia Pemberton, in a car accident. I do not feel that 21 to 27 months is justice for killing a person. The victim’s family is now left to feel that the justice system of this country lets killers away with a simple sentence.
If I were Georgia’s parents, or the parents of any victim, I would be furious to think that my child lost their life, but someone accused of vehicular homicide might lose two years or so to prison. Then a person is released and is able to go a live the rest of his life. Those convicted of vehicular homicide took a life whether they premeditated it.
It is unfair to the families to let the person who killed their family member or friend go free with such a light sentence. The people who lost the friend or family member deserve to feel that the convicted person received a sentence appropriate to the crime committed. A person who is caught with drugs receives more prison time than a person who kills someone else.
I think that this is a very serious and sad problem. The sentences for a vehicular homicide conviction should be more. Two years: is that all that an innocent person’s life is worth? A person’s life is worth more than two years. I believe that a car is just as deadly as a gun or knife if not more. My heart goes out to all of the victim’s families.
