I read in The Herald on Sept. 13 that “Hollywood gives it a rest.” My question is why should there be a rest? Why would movie makers want to make films such as “Collateral Damage” in which terrorists bomb a Los Angeles skyscraper, “Big Trouble” with a scene of a bomb on a plane or “Spider Man” with a scene of a helicopter carrying fleeing robbers who get trapped between two towers of the World Trade Center? In the movie “Independence Day” the White House and Empire State Building are blown up.
Six months ago on one Fox drama the World Trade Center was threatened. “The Lone Gunmen” featured a U.S. government plot to boost arm sales by crashing an airliner into one of the towers, then blaming terrorists. What is it that provokes film makers into making movies that provide “entertainment” for people in seeing our landmarks, our country, human lives lost, destroyed and maimed? What does one get from this “entertainment”? I wonder if the film makers ever thought that with this kind of movie making, one day it could become very real.
How do people react in seeing these films? Do they laugh, sneer, cry, get angry, what? Whatever the reasons, making any film using our country, its contents, its people or our flag for entertainment in a violent way, is mocking our country’s worth. Using these things in the movie industry for money and ratings is as low as Hollywood can go. There’s a lot of sick mentality amongst us. Just a little nudge initiates ideas. These movies certainly don’t help.
Yes, Hollywood, give it a rest. Better yet let it go. Stop the filming of these movies. Our minds and hearts are heavy, but very proudthat America is strong. And with people’s unity, support and true patriotism, we will prevail.
