Shame is that laws aren’t enforced

Regarding the Sunday letter, “Let us welcome our fellow humans”:

I am surprised that the writer, as an immigrant, would speak of how we should be “ashamed” at how the immigration issue is being handled. He of all people should see the benefits of going through proper channels and becoming an American. He scolds the American people for what exactly? Should I be ashamed that my children don’t get the full educational benefits they should be getting because our taxpayer money is going to teaching English? Should I be ashamed that my money is going to support programs catering to the foreign population that cannot care for itself?

Maybe it would please him if we enforced the laws dealing with immigration. Maybe we should round up the illegal immigrants who are flooding our state, as well as our country, and deport them. Then maybe there won’t be groups outside Home Depot and in the writer’s words, “most of them did not want to look at me, trying to conserve a fraction of dignity.” That may be his interpretation, but what I see is a group of probably illegal aliens who, without proper papers, cannot get work through regular channels. And like most people when they get caught doing something wrong, they avoid eye contact.

The writer should be ashamed for comparing our countries actions to that of Nazi Germany. If I have any shame concerning immigration it is due to the fact that our elected officials are scared to step up and enforce the rules as they are written.
