Let’s see if I have this straight. According to The Herald’s Sunday editorial, it’s OK for a teacher to teach students to break the rules and jeer at authority, but it’s not OK for the school superintendent to ensure the safety of those same students by monitoring that rogue teacher’s in-school activities?
Give me a break. Any teacher who gives her employer the finger should in return expect a general lack of confidence in her ability to command students. Last time I looked, if a teacher breaks the public trust with our kids, especially after hours, it is the duty of the district to step in and hold that teacher accountable.
Everett schools Superintendent Carol Whitehead is one of the most articulate, straight-talking, savvy administrators our district has ever enjoyed. For the teachers union to defend the indefensible actions of one misguided teacher at the expense of even one day of Whitehead’s exemplary leadership is a travesty.
Shame on The Herald, shame on the teachers union, and shame on the person who threatened Whitehead’s life. You have deprived us of a good person and a superbly able chief of schools. You get a big fat “F.”
