The first contact I had with John Taylor was when my brother Doug was lost on Mount Pilchuck in October 1962 (the Columbus Day storm). Doug was lost on the mountain for three days and was only 14 years old. John was one of the many volunteers who assisted in searching for him.
Our second meeting was under better circumstances. After returning from Vietnam, I joined the Washington National Guard in Snohomish. Being one of the detachment officers, he introduced himself and promptly asked how Doug was doing. This was 10 years after the incident. What a guy! For the next 10 years, we spent quality time together with the Guard, furthering our Army careers, talking about mutual friends, as well as assisting on some maintenance on a tracked vehicle for Snohomish Search and Rescue.
