I am writing in response to the article in Sunday’s Herald (“Baker Heights: Tight-knit Everett community must scatter,” The Herald, Aug. 25). I also feel some heartbreak for not only the residents but for my own memories as a child living in Baker Heights.
We, my mom and four siblings, lived in Baker Heights in the early ’60s and attended Hawthorne Elementary and North Junior. At that time we referred to it as the old project and Grandview as the new project.
What is now the Denney Juvenile Justice Center was just a field connecting the two. My husband lived in the new project at one time. I was so fortunate to become a mail carrier in Everett and delivered to both Bakerview and Baker Heights for about 12 years of my career before retiring.
I met so many wonderful people, not only the residents, but people working for the Everett Housing Authority. While reading the article tears swelled up because I knew how hard it was for everyone involved. Having to move from their home and the Housing Authority having to do it.
I would always tell people to think of it as a new beginning, as I’m sure some did and some are still trying to do. I will always have a special place in my heart for the people I called “my people.”
