What a breath of fresh (non) political air Betty Neighbors is! Ever since I was old enough to vote, I have. I won’t say how many elections that amounts to. Let’s just say a few. Whenever I learn that a friend or acquaintance does not vote, I ask them why. Invariably, they say something like “all politicians are alike,” or “they’re just talking heads,” or “it doesn’t matter because special interests control everything.”
Sometimes I kind of agree with my non-voting friends. Still, I usually keep up with political issues and I even know quite a few local candidates and elected officials. Too many of them really are just talking heads, saying whatever they think you want to hear, or saying nothing much at all – most of them doing even less.
But not Betty Neighbors. She sort of gives back a reason to vote. She is decidedly not just another politician. She’s never even run for office before. Instead, she’s been busy running a successful business. She doesn’t spout platitudes. She just talks common sense. She doesn’t have all the answers, but she sure asks the right questions.
I figure we’ve given the slick professional politicians enough of a chance to run this county. It seems to me they’ve just run it into the ground. I’m ready to try someone different. Someone who just wants to do a good, honest job of running the business of local government. Someone smart and honest and fair who has plain sensible ideas about how to efficiently and effectively attend to taxpayer business. That’s what I’m voting for this time around when I vote for Betty Neighbors.
