I urge readers of The Herald to sign the petitions to get initiative 1631 on the ballots this fall. The Earth is getting hotter and we know we are the cause. The sooner we take steps to hold the use of fossil fuels, the easier it will be to eventually slow and reverse the damage mankind has done to our atmosphere.
When I was a student engineer in the 1960s my fellow chemical engineering students had figured it out that continuing to burn fossil fuels would toast the Earth. That was 50 years ago, but we did it anyway. The United States set a standard of living that the whole world now tries to emulate. The Earth cannot support such waste and irresponsibility. We must set a new standard through the use of renewable energy sources, local food production, conservation of water and other natural resources, and respect for the web of all life of which we are a part.
Let’s get I-1631 on the ballot so that all Washingtonians can share their concern.
